Sales-tax and 1099 prep notes for the accountant

SI gathers store tax reports, marketplace tax lines, and contractor payments into a notes packet for your accountant, and does not file anything.

Worth knowing: Tax: SI organizes reports and drafts notes; it does not give tax advice, decide nexus, or file returns. A qualified accountant or tax preparer makes those calls.

The problem

The store, the marketplace, and the payment processor each show tax a different way. Sales-tax returns and 1099 forms are the accountant's job, but the store owner still has to find the reports. A general year-end packet gathers folders. It does not line up ecommerce tax reports with what a marketplace already remitted.

What SI does

SI collects the reports you point it at: store tax summary, marketplace tax or facilitator statements, payout reports, and contractor payment totals. It builds a notes sheet: tax collected vs remitted by channel, jurisdictions named in the reports, 1099-K figures as they appear, and contractor totals that may need a 1099-NEC. It lists gaps, such as a channel with no report or a missing month. It does not decide nexus, what is taxable, or what to file.

Examples

The same job looks different in different businesses. These are illustrations, not client results.

  • Shopify store selling in several states

Notes show tax collected in the store vs tax a marketplace says it remitted as facilitator, with months that have no marketplace file listed as missing.

  • Multi-channel seller

1099-K figures from the processor are copied as printed, next to payout totals, for the accountant to reconcile.

  • Brand that pays makers

Contractor payments from the year are totaled by person from the bill sheet, with a note that addresses still need to be confirmed before any 1099-NEC.

What it takes to set up

The year's store and marketplace tax reports, payout exports, and a list of contractors you paid. Last year's filing or the accountant's checklist if you have it. Setup is often a few days.

What a human still checks

  • The accountant decides what to file; SI makes no tax judgments.
  • Totals are checked against the source reports.
  • Sensitive documents go only through the accountant's channel.

Try it yourself

Paste this into your SI tool of choice and swap the [bracketed] parts for your own details. It asks SI to stop and show you before it does anything.
