Pricing and margin check across your catalog
SI compares the price you charge with the cost you have on file, and lists products or services where the price no longer covers that cost.
Worth knowing: The check uses the cost you provide. It is not a full landed-cost study, and it is not a client result.
The problem
Costs moved and selling prices did not, or they moved unevenly. A competitor price watch looks outward. It does not tell you which of your own items or services are priced below the cost sitting in your sheet, invoice history, or price list.
What SI does
SI reads your catalog or rate sheet and the cost you point it at (last invoice cost, a cost column, or a landed-cost column you already maintain). It lines up each item or service and shows price, recorded cost, and the gap. It flags rows where price is at or below the recorded cost, where price has not changed since the cost did, and where cost or price is missing. The threshold is yours. SI does not change prices.
Examples
The same job looks different in different businesses. These are illustrations, not client results.
- Retailer
A cost column from recent supplier bills is compared with current shelf and online prices. Items priced at or below that cost are listed with both numbers.
- Service shop
Standard job prices are compared with the parts and labor cost on the rate sheet. Jobs where the recorded cost is higher than the posted price are flagged.
- Consultant with a rate card
Package prices are set next to the hours and contractor costs written on the worksheet, and packages with no cost filled in are listed separately.
What it takes to set up
A catalog or price list and a cost source you trust, plus the rule for what to flag (for example, price at or below recorded cost). Setup is often a day or two if the columns are clean, longer if names do not match.
What a human still checks
- A person checks the cost source before treating a row as a real margin problem.
- Missing costs are listed, not guessed.
- Price changes are made by a person; SI only prepares the list.
Try it yourself
Paste this into your SI tool of choice and swap the [bracketed] parts for your own details. It asks SI to stop and show you before it does anything.
Using the price list [file] and the cost source [file], match items on [SKU, name, or service]. For each match, show the current price, the recorded cost, and the difference. Flag rows where price is at or below the recorded cost, where price has not changed since the cost changed, and where cost or price is blank. Do not invent costs. Do not change prices. Pause and show me before sending, submitting, posting, or changing anything.
